Shoes that are too big? What can be done to make them smaller?

2022-05-18

Are the pumps you picked up on sale too big? Stiletto boots you received as a gift don't fit as well as they should? Half-shoes bought a few months ago are too loose? You don't have to send them back to the shop or look for a new owner. Here's how to make your favourite shoes fit a little bigger. Here are a few tips for oversized shoes.

What to do with too big shoes?

Favourite colour, dream cut, low price - have you been tempted to buy oversized shoes because of the shade that perfectly matches your dress or an attractive discount? Not only you! Probably everyone has bought oversized shoes at least once without measuring or hoping that they will fit in time. The fate of shoes that are too big is often the same - either they find a second home or they end up at the bottom of the wardrobe.

What to do when shoes are too big? Firstly: try replacing them with smaller ones. Remember that in our shop you have up to 30 days to return or exchange unworn shoes bought online for a reason. So before you go out for a walk in your newly bought ballerinas, make sure the shoes are not too loose. You didn't have time to test your new shoes at home and your newly bought boots are no longer returnable? No problem! You can give away or sell your ill-fitting shoes. Local sales groups are becoming more and more popular, and you can give items of clothing a second life.

If you've bought a pair of stilettos that are too big for you but still can't seem to get over the fact that you can't wear them with your favourite skirt, we have good news for you. You don't have to give them up. We know simple, cheap and effective ways to get rid of oversized shoes. Some are completely free and just take a little time.

Effective ways to make shoes too big - how to reduce their size?

1. heels for too big shoes

What to do when your shoes are too big? On the market you will find a wide range of accessories that will allow you to fit your shoe to your foot. The most popular are heels. They are available in leather and gel versions. They vary in size, shape and price. This is one of the cheapest ways to make shoes too big. Heels cost from several to a dozen or so zlotys. They fill the free space in the shoe between the heel and the heel counter, making the shoe fit the foot better. They have another important task. They protect the Achilles tendon against abrasions and blisters. How to use the heel counter? It is very simple! Just remove the protective foil and stick them to the shoe in the place where the foot touches the shoe. If you want your heels to last a long time, remember to degrease the inside of the shoe with a soft cloth. Remember that the heel counter will need to be replaced after prolonged use.

If you want the heels of your oversized shoes to be as invisible as possible, opt for models made of transparent plastic. This is ideal for open shoes such as high-heeled pumps. For covered shoes we recommend leather heels, which, like gel heels, protect the tendons from abrasion and are safe for the skin. Thanks to the heel counter, you can wear your favourite shoes even if they are too loose.

2. insoles for oversized shoes

An alternative to heels are inserts for oversized shoes. These also come in two versions: leather or gel. Their purchase costs around a dozen or so zlotys. Put the insole into the shoe in such a way that it fills the whole space under the foot. Insoles not only allow you to better fit the shoe to the foot, but also have a positive impact on the comfort of wearing shoes. On the market you will find latex insoles with aloe vera, which also helps to minimise the risk of odour. In addition to traditional insoles, you will also find specialist accessories for shoes that are too loose. An insole which reduces the size of the shoe is appropriately shaped. Thanks to this, it perfectly adapts to the shape of the foot, filling the excess space in the shoe.

Shoes 1 size too big - how to reduce them?

Remember that even the best insole will not work, if purchased shoes are too large by several sizes. However, if the shoes do not fit tightly to the foot, it is worth trying home-made methods. Natural leather is characterised by high elasticity. This is one of the reasons why it is the material of choice for footwear. The longer you wear your favourite half-shoes or pumps, the greater the chance of a perfect fit. However, if you don't have time to wait, you can "help" your shoes. How?

- Use a flower sprayer to gently wet the entire surface of the shoe.
- Set your shoes aside for a few minutes.
- Dry your shoes with a hairdryer (do not use hot air to avoid damaging your shoes). When drying, keep the dryer at a sufficient distance (at least 10 cm from the shoe).
- When your shoes are dry, check whether they fit your feet better. If they don't, follow the above steps again until you find that the oversized shoes have shrunk to the desired size.

Can shoes made from synthetic materials such as eco-leather be treated in a similar way? Plastic is not as flexible as natural leather, so reducing your shoes by 1 size will be a little more difficult (which does not mean impossible!). If you want to reduce shoes made of synthetic materials, you need a little more time. Wait for at least an hour after soaking your shoes and only then dry them with a hairdryer. As with natural leather models, make sure you keep the right distance and do not use too much heat. Repeat the process until you get the hang of it.

Stiletto heels that are too big - what should I do?

You can treat stiletto heels the same way as other styles, by putting in an insole or heel counter, or try the hairdryer method. These are great options if you have a lot of time. What if you have to put your newly bought shoes back on almost straight out of the box? You can use the once popular cotton wool or sponge patent. Simply fill the front of the shoe with the material of your choice. It's a quick and discreet solution. But it's not perfect. It's a method that will only work in 'emergency' situations that require immediate action.

Is there a solution to oversized open-toed shoes? For women's sandals or pumps with a cut-out at the front, heel cups or gel heels can be a good solution. They not only fill the excess space in the shoe, providing a better fit for the foot, but also minimise the risk of chafing.

Sports shoes - what to do if they're too big?

Newly purchased running shoes seem too big for you? Good! Remember that your foot also moves when you run. Shoes that are too tight can cause painful abrasions and corns. Your toes will 'fly' forward every time your feet touch the ground, hitting the front of the shoe. Running shoes, unlike other models designed for non-sporting activities, should be a little looser. So before you go all out to make your running shoes a little smaller, check how they behave during training. Experts recommend that sports shoes designed for jogging should be larger by up to an inch. If you're buying sports shoes for everyday wear, do the same as you would with other styles.

How not to buy too big shoes? Measure your feet!

Tired of buying shoes that are too big? Measure your foot and look at the size chart before you buy. Remember that the length of the insole in shoes of the same size by different manufacturers may be different! How to measure your foot? Place a clean A4 sheet of paper on a flat surface. Place your foot in the centre and trace around it. If you have difficulty doing this yourself, ask another person to help you. Use a tape measure or ruler to measure your foot from the heel to the big toe. Measure the other foot in the same way. Done!
